Musicians affiliated with the Sounds of Malawi record label endeavor, spearheaded by American producer Harlan Steinberger, have expressed their appreciation for the project, emphasizing its potential to create abundant opportunities for them.

Harlan, renowned for his work on musician Keturah’s eponymous album in the USA, has commenced recording sessions for the album at Jacaranda Studios in Chigumula, Blantyre.

As of yesterday, the roster of artists recorded by Harlan included Eunice Kadzuwa Mhango, Nyago, Ben Mankhamba, Agorosso, Keturah, Lucky Stars Band under the leadership of Boniface Ndamera, Snowden Ibbu, Waliko Makhala, Goma Nyondo, and Kukana Kuba Kasambwe Band. Recording sessions are ongoing, with artists such as Giddes Chalamanda and Chigo Nyasulu lined up for today.

“This initiative is monumental for our creative sector. Following my collaboration with Harlan on my Keturah album, I am thrilled to embark on another significant project. It marks a turning point for Malawian music. My gratitude goes to Harlan Steinberger and his spouse, along with Luc Deschamps and Marie Da Silva, for spearheading this endeavor,” remarked the ‘Chiwewe’ star during her session.

Agorosso, whose session followed Keturah’s, underscored the project's potential to elevate Malawian music globally.

“We urgently require more initiatives like this. Music, in particular, and the arts, in general, have long been marginalized. Therefore, the presence of a project like this brings a smile to my face,” stated the creator of ‘Folly’.

Mankhamba shared his positive experience with Harlan, expressing his enjoyment during the session.

“The producer and I had the opportunity to delve into various musical matters, notably the recording of traditional instrument players such as Mpotandebvu, who specializes in the pango,” relayed the singer and guitarist.

Harlan, collaborating with local talents like Dan Khoviwa and Blessings Gondwe, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in recording, noting that they had already completed five albums by yesterday.

“We've accomplished more than anticipated. I am impressed by the artists’ dedication in the studio. They are making remarkable contributions, and I am also gaining invaluable insights throughout this process. This music is both enriching and authentic, deserving the world's attention,” he affirmed.

He emphasized the project's significance in documenting audio and video material for current and future use.

Luc Deschamps, Director of Jacaranda Cultural Centre, conveyed his delight with the strides made by the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session.

“The overwhelming support received for the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic sessions has been remarkable, and the record label is a testament to that. We aspire to do more, all with the aim of propelling our Malawian artists to the forefront,” Deschamps concluded.
