At the recent 15th edition of the National Schools Youth Arts Festival (Nasfest), the Light of Youth Creative Organisation (Lyco), under the leadership of Executive Director James Kitchen, conferred prestigious awards to several noteworthy individuals. Among the distinguished recipients were Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda, and Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule. The event, hosted at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe, showcased Lyco's commitment to acknowledging the outstanding contributions of various stakeholders across diverse sectors.

Kitchen, whose organization has been orchestrating this international youth cultural celebration since 2017, emphasized that the awards have always been an integral aspect of their event, serving as a means to honor the noteworthy efforts of individuals within different spheres. Chimwendo Banda was lauded for his dedication to youth empowerment, while Kamtukule was recognized for her endeavors in advancing tourism within the country.

Among the other honorees were social media influencer and writer Stanley Onjezani Kenani, commended for his humanitarian and literary endeavors, Deborah Mbale of Mai Mbambande, recognized for her support of the elderly, business leader Simbi Phiri, acknowledged for his contributions to community development, and dramatist Smith Likongwe, celebrated for his significant impact on the theatrical landscape.

"This tradition of honoring exceptional individuals is not new to us. We have bestowed awards in previous years, and this year is simply a continuation of that tradition." Kitchen reiterated.

The three-day international festival, which commenced on Friday and concluded on Sunday, featured captivating performances from both local and international talents. Kitchen highlighted how Nasfest has provided a platform for cultural exchange, with countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe sharing the stage with Malawian schools and youth.

Since its inception, Nasfest has reached over 90 schools nationwide and provided training to nearly 2,000 young people. Furthermore, Kitchen emphasized the festival's role in fostering connections with other countries in the Southern African Development Community region, underscoring its significance as a catalyst for regional cultural collaboration.
