Easter Theatre Festival Returns.

Yesterday, the Solomonic Peacocks, organizers of the Easter Theatre Festival, announced that they are fully prepared for the festival's fifth edition, scheduled to take place at the Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre from March 22nd to 24th, 2024. Speaking at a press briefing held at JCC in Blantyre on February 13th, the theatre group's director, McArthur Matukuta, expressed their anticipation for the upcoming event.
Matukuta highlighted that this year's festival promises an
array of attractions, with participants from 12 countries, including Malawi,
set to showcase various artistic disciplines such as theatre, poetry, stand-up
comedy, storytelling, and dance. Emphasizing the festival's significance,
Matukuta urged increased participation, underscoring its unique dedication to
promoting theatre in the country. The festival will operate under the theme
'Your talent matters, create, inspire, enjoy towards 2063', derived from its
core values of zero segregation, inclusivity, integration, equity, and
equality.
Furthermore, Matukuta noted the special nature of this
year's Easter Theatre Festival, as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of
Solomonic Peacocks. He emphasized the festival's multifaceted impact, not only
as a platform for entertainment but also as a driver of tourism and economic
growth through art tourism or creative tourism.
Highlighting the international dimension of the event,
Matukuta revealed the participation of performers from France, Germany,
Portugal, South Africa, eSwatini, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Tanzania, contributing
to the influx of foreign exchange. Solomonic Peacocks is scheduled to present
two performances during the festival, including a collaborative piece with the
Kwathu Drama Group.
At the press conference, artists from Germany and France
expressed their excitement for the festival, pledging to engage with local
artists and share their expertise. Annedore Smith from Germany announced plans
to conduct a workshop on marketing, recognizing the need to elevate the status
of artists.
Luc Deschamps, Director of JCC and French Honorary Consul
to Malawi, commended Solomonic Peacocks for their partnership over the years,
affirming their belief in the transformative power of theatre, particularly in
addressing societal issues. He announced the performance of the French group
Compagnie du Hasard, presenting the play 'Odyssey' and engaging in school
outreach activities to promote theatre.
The lineup of artists for this year's festival includes
Dikamawoko Troupe, Young Travellers Theatre, YDC, New Beginning Arts, Africa
Dance Group from Tanzania, Patsime Trust from Zimbabwe, Catarina Mota from
Portugal, Women in Theatre, and Bodies Unbound from Rwanda.
